SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — Tomorrow marks the actual competition portion of Texas's largest saltwater fishing tournament, which takes place in the valley and has reached another milestone.
"Friday and Saturday are two full days of fishing and Sunday will be our awards ceremony," said TIFT tournament director Kristi Collier. "We're celebrating our 75th year, so TIFT has been around for a long long time and we have third and even fourth generation anglers that are a part of this year's tournament."
But despite how long it's been since the inception of TIFT, today's event called Play Day, was all about celebrating the younger generations. Children turned out in the hundreds to have a fun time at the Convention Center on South Padre Island.
"Today, PlayDay, is all about the kids, so we give them the opportunity to run around, play, do a little fishing, and we have the kid fish tank, so a variety of different things to honor our children because our children are the junior anglers of the future generation of TIFT," said Collier.
Because TIFT is a family event that's also very kid friendly, anyone who competes in PlayDay will be eligible to receive a participation medal at the awards ceremony after.
"It's fun, but it's also a bit of a competition as well," said Collier. "So as they go from station to station, they'll jot down their times and they'll turn in their slips and everyone who's participated today will get a medal."
Today is also the last opportunity for people to register for the tournament.
"Registrations are rolling in," said Collier. "We anticipate over 1200 anglers in this tournament."
The tournament will start tomorrow morning.
