Pharr was the only city in the Valley to put together a celebration for National Public Works Week. The first annual public works event was designed to honor citizens who have poured sweat, blood and tears into serving others.

"Here in the Valley, this is the first ever, uh nobody in the Valley has done that on a regular basis, most cities do celebrate it but not as we are celebrate it with a celebration, a festival. We are highlighting the streets division, transportation, traffic, service center, recycling, storm water and drainage. And each of these divisions will highlight and focus exactly what they do and how they help the infrastructure of the City of Pharr."

Pharr citizens of all ages attended the celebration hosted by the Public Works Department. Games, costumes, food and information were included as part of the festivities.

"Although this celebration is fun in and of itself, the main purpose of this event is to draw attention to the first responders and public works employees who work so hard to maintain the city of Pharr.
We are the ones that were out there along with, uh, Pharr police and any other emergency operator, uh, trying to do and take care of the infrastructure of the City of Pharr, and more importantly, the quality of life."

The main goal of Pharr's Public Works Week celebration was to educate people on how various emergency services operate and observe those first responders as unsung heroes.

"What best way to, to introduce more of a bigger message in general, not just recycling, but public works, than to do it through the National Public Works Week celebration?"
