The city of Pharr is not going forward with a controversial ordinance for used car dealerships.

The original ordinance proposed a fee on all cars sold in Pharr. It also charged dealerships for a city license to sell cars.

Pharr officials said it was to offset a cut in funding from the state to maintain highways. The major provisions in the ordinance were voted down Tuesday night.

The dealerships in the city joined with trade groups to oppose the fees.

"We were able to draft a pretty lengthy legal argument against some of the provisions we found the most troublesome," Texas Independent Auto Dealers Association deputy director Danny Langfield said.  "And I don't know for a fact that was what changed the commissioners' minds for moving forward with the fee structure, but hopefully it did have a positive impact."

There will still be some restrictions as to where new dealerships can set up shop.
