Some people like to give pets as gifts for the holidays, but there are many times when that's not a good idea.

The Palm Valley Animal Center in Edinburg says you should always know the recipient wants a pet.

It suggests giving instead an adoption certificate; basically a gift card so the recipient can go choose the animal himself or herself.

A 20 pound dog is estimated to cost north of 500 dollars. So know that the situation is right for the new pet owner.

"The recipient may have a pet already at home, if they have pets already at home, it'd be ideal if they can meet," Palm Valley's Robert Russell said. "Even if they don't get to meet here, if we can explain to them the best way to introduce the animals outside the home in a neutral place to make the transition as successful as possible."

The shelter says the holidays are its busiest time of the year for adoptions. It even held an adoption sale last week.
