BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — It identifies fake documents before a customs agent even makes contact with a pedestrian attempting to cross into the U.S. It also gives agents a heads up if the law is after a person.

"If there are any lookouts or anything like that the officers are already going to have a heads up," said Customs and Border Protection Agent, Eddie Perez.

The new kiosk technology went live Thursday. Agents have been training for weeks and will familiarize pedestrians with the new procedure over the next few days. Officials say the kiosk check is actually just a step before the main processing that is meant to better prepare agents.

"It'll give officers a few seconds to id the person and know who they are before they come up to the booth. So we can make a determination if they need secondary inspection or can be sent down the road," said Perez.

In addition to the security aspects of the technology, it will also save agents about thirty seconds per traveler. Officials say multiply that by the thousands of pedestrians that cross here daily... And a lot of time is saved.

The Gateway International Bridge here in Brownsville is the only bridge in the valley to use this new technology.
