"I like pizza!"

And he's not the only one. More than fifty parents showed up at Yturria Elementary to have lunch with their children for National School Lunch Week.

"The main idea is to bring awareness to the community to the parents of our program," said BISD FNS administrator Silverio Capistran, Jr. "At the same time we can answer any questions they may have about our menus, why we serve what we serve...one of the new requirements is to serve more vegetables and fruits and we are compliant with that."

"I want to see what the cafeterias are serving nowadays, how healthy food is, basically and mostly because I wanted to be here for him," said BISD parent Irma Torres.

"Even as a parent I enjoy being able to have lunch with my son," said BISD parent Melissa Fuentes. "It's nice to be able to see him during the day and sit down and have a healthy meal."

And while the parents were satisfied with the various fruits and vegetables the BISD Food and Nutrition Service served, the kids were also happy with their meal options.

Not only does BISD offer healthy alternatives for lunch food, but for National School Lunch Week, they're offering a student favorite: pizza.

"Any questions asked that they may have on the food lunch program, we're here to answer their questions, and of course, we're bringing in the kids favorite food," said BISD FNS supervisor Araceli Soto.

But as with any nutritious lunch menu, the main goal is to make sure the food is actually being eaten:

"We see an increase in the consumption of vegetables, not only at our elementaries but at our high schools as well," said Capistran, Jr. "We're just happy an excited that parents came here to support the program and we're just here to answer any questions."
