Palm Weevil Could be Threat to Local Palm Trees

Valley insect and plant specialist are keeping an eye out for a bug that poses a real threat to palm trees in the Valley.

The bug is called a Palm Weevil and it's about the size of your finger nail and is native to Florida. The insect can kill a full grown palm tree by lying it's eggs in the tree and once the eggs hatch to larvae the larvae will burrow through the palm tree. Luckily no palm weevils have been sighted in the Valley as of yet. Specialist say instead of searching for the bug just keep an eye out on your palm trees and if they begin to yellow or their leaves look bad then report it the Texas Agri-Life Center in Weslaco.
