Requests for Florida concealed handgun permits skyrocket.
Punta Gorda, Florida gun shop owner Ryan Ingle is busier than ever.
Ingle says more and more people are arming themselves these days.
State numbers prove it.
In 2000 there were a little over 28,000 new applications for concealed weapons permits.
Last year, that number rose to nearly 167,000.
Ingle says he thinks he knows why.
"Quite honestly, you've got a bad economy, and that drives crime," he says.
Ingle also teaches a handgun safety course, a requirement for a concealed weapons permit.
He says currently he's backlogged for the next two months with folks needing to learn in order to pack heat.
With the economy still down and reports of home break-ins on the rise, the state expects to see the number of concealed carry permits go even higher.
