A Brownsville man is recovering at a hospital tonight after being shot right outside his apartment complex. Several residents at the Borders Apartment complex in Brownsville were awakened by the sounds of several gunshots.
27-year-old Marco Cedillo has known Mendoza for months. Not only are they neighbors, he says they're also very good friends.
“Two days ago we were playing basketball here at the courts.”
The call to emergency responders was received around 2:45 a.m. Police arrived to a bloody scene at the 3700 building of the Borders Apartments. Spokesman, Jimmy Manrrique, says the 24-year-old got home around 2:30. He walked in to a party his sister had thrown. He went to his room and attempted to sleep but the noise was overwhelming.
“He decided to break up the party and started kicking people out of the apartment.” Although some people did leave, 19-year-old Bruno Leal resisted. He didn’t want to leave the party. They began to argue and then Leal shot at Mendoza several times “Alex was able to run inside the apartment and that's where he collapsed.”
Mendoza was taken to Valley Regional Medical Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his left arm. We spoke to hospital staff today and they tell us Mendoza’s condition has been upgraded to stable. Leal fled after the shooting, but was arrested hours later at his house. He has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
