Old City Cemetery tour aims to spook and inform
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — It's calm and peaceful now, but Old City Cemetery is expected to really come to life with this year's ninth annual "Murder, Mayhem and Scandal Tour" on Saturday. And while one might define this tour as scary in nature, it's also educational - especially this year:
"The research that's gone into this tour on this year is much more bountiful and, uh, so there will be a lot of elements in there, and a lot of the people here before, who've not been known for their interesting deaths, will come to life," said Brownsville Museum curator Gene Fernandez.
And the adrenaline junkies who enjoy being spooked can look forward to certain stories, like the one about the various toys and stuffed animals that keep mysteriously appearing at the grave of a five-year-old girl.
"We have no idea how they appear here. Whether she's roaming around or whatever, that's anybody's guess, but we have had people that have seen a little girl go through the cemetery at times," said Fernandez.
But the spooky tales aren't the only aspects of the tour that have captivated peoples' interests:
"The main reason that people are excited about this tour is that it will inform them," said Fernandez. "There's so much unknown about this cemetery and this tour's really going to fill in a lot of the gaps and educate the people...there's some people that maybe the most interesting thing about their life might've been their death."
