City and school officials joined together in support of the Groundbreaking of Athlos Leadership Academy Brownsville, a new state-of-the-art charter school to be built on the city's north side.

Two cheer squads and a dance team kicked off the groundbreaking for the $20 million-dollar Jubilee Academic Center Campus.

But the weather brought officials and students inside to participate in the turning of the dirt.

Officials spoke of how the 9.7 acre campus will feature a performance stage and fitness center complete with a basketball court and 40-yard turf field.

The school says it will especially focus on athleticism because there is a big need among Valley youth.

"Here in the Rio Grande Valley, it's been stated that one out of four students are obese and at our new facility we are gonna focus on athleticism and starting teaching students as early as kinder about hand coordination, character education, and eating healthy," said associate superintendent of the Rio Grande Valley Jubilee Academic Center Flor Rodriguez.

The school is being built on Pablo Kisel Blvd. Two more Athlos Academies will be built in Austin and San Antonio.
