NWord Triggers Lawsuit
Chicago teacher sues after suspension for use of "n-word" during classroom discussion.
A Chicago teacher has filed a lawsuit challenging his suspension for use of the "n-word" in class.
Lincoln Brown, a teacher at Murray Language Academy in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, says he was suspended for using the "n-word" when discussing with students the word's ramifications and the harm it can cause.
The discussion occurred after Brown intercepted a note where one student referred to another using the word, and he decided to use the moment to teach the class a lesson.
Gregory Mason, the principle, entered the room amidst the discussion and suspended Brown for using verbally abusive language.
Brown maintains the suspension was unjust and that a strict ban on any word is counterproductive.
