Nursing Home Patient Attacked and Killed

A nursing home patient dies after police say, he was beaten by another patient in the nursing home.
The incident occurred in Weslaco.
Police say 48 year old Genonevo Rivera attacked 84 year old Raul Saldivar.
It all happened at the Retana Manor nursing home in Weslaco.
Friday night police responded to an aggravated assault.
When Weslaco police arrived police say Rivera was using a metal pipe to beat Saldivar.
Police say the medical equipment caused a serious fracture to the man's head.
Personnel at the nursing home tell police the motive of the attack was that Rivera thought Saldivar was in his bed and room, when in fact he was not.
Saldivar was rushed to Knapp Hospital, and then later taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center.
A couple days later Saldivar died.
It took two officers to apprehend Rivera.
Rivera has been transferred to a mental health facility.
After doctor's examined him they concluded he had a mental illness.
At this time Rivera has not been charged with any crime.
The case will be passed onto the District Attorney's Office.
Retana Manor has released a statement saying they are deeply saddened by the death of a resident from their care center who was involved in an alleged attack by another resident.
