Booming demand for smartphones doesn't mean market for their predecessors has disappeared.

Smartphones have a commanding lead in the wireless communication market, but that doesn't mean demand for the smartphone's predecessor has disappeared.

Whatever you call them, the almost quaint, almost old-fashioned flip phones remain hugely popular.

Older users are a major chunk of the target audience.

Carriers like Verizon and AT&T have customized plans and manufacturers have customized equipment, like the Jitterbug from Great Call or Samsung's Haven.

"It even comes with a button for 911 calls. So, if you can't figure out 'Oh no 911!' you just hit that button, and it also comes with an enhanced speaker phone," says's Maggie Reardon.

Not-so-smart phones are also attractive to those just wanting to save money.

"If you get a smartphone, it may be neat, people may think it's kinda cool but it's expensive," says Reardon.

Expensive meaning up to $700 a year, half of which gets you a simple cell phone.
