One Economy is stopping in several cities around the nation helping you fill out those income tax returns this year. One thing you'll need to bring is your W2's.
"We focus on helping low income communities receive especially their money."
The non-profit organization set shop here, the financial aid office at the UTB campus but that doesn't mean this service is only provided to students. Tax consultant, Oscar Quiñonez, says students are the ones who need the most help in filing out these returns.
"Have kids learn how to do their tax returns. See what the importance on filing your taxes are, not to just be afraid of the IRS."
18-year-old college freshman, Refugio Chapa III, never filed an income tax return on his own until today.
"I’m very nervous. Why are you so nervous? I just want to make sure I do it right."
Quiñonez was the guiding hand throughout the filing process for Chapa. Since Chapa is a full time student at UTB, he only works part time. Filling out his tax returns was rather simple and he says filing on his own next year is definite.
"That was easier than I expected. It was a lot easier. I think I’m going to definitely do this by myself next year."
"Through One Economy, the Wal-Mart foundation and United Way, they're our funders, and what happens is that they give us a program for them to file for free, which is important. There’s no catch."
There is no catch but one of the pre-requisites for the free service is that you must earn under $57,000 a year, which in many cases for college students, they don't earn that kind of money until they've graduated.
"You get to save money and you get to know what you're doing."
The service is provided Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 5:00 p.m. According to Quiñonez, the filing process should not take longer than 30 minutes. Just make sure you bring your ID, social security card, last year's tax returns, if you filed, and your W2 forms.
"If you guys see the van riding around Brownsville, that's me riding around. Don’t be afraid. It’s a free service, there's no catch. Just take advantage so you get your money for free."
One Economy will stick around Brownsville until February 11th. Their next stop will be, El Paso.
