A newborn baby's first ride home from the hospital should be a safe one, not to mention that it's law. All children must be restrained in a proper car seat.

A non-profit organization that usually provides car seats to mothers who can't afford to buy one is struggling to provide this service.

Babies are born every day here in Brownsville. The reality is, due to the poverty stricken area, not all families have the financial means to purchase a $50 car seat to drive their newborn baby home in.

An organization that has come to the rescue for years, can no longer play hero. The Tip of Texas Family Outreach "Sharing Closet" is filled with diapers, baby clothing, bottles, just about everything a newborn baby needs, except for one thing, new born baby car seats. All that remains in their closet are three seats for toddlers.

Tip of Texas has been the sole provider of car seats for children of all ages, especially newborns for the past several years. Both Brownsville hospitals call upon the organization requesting car seats on a regular basis.

"They fax over a form and we can have an infant car seat for mom and dad before discharge time," said Tip of Texas, Executive Director Liza Benson.

Last year alone they served over 230 families who needed car seat assistance.

However, in the last two weeks they haven't been able to help. A total cut in funding, one month ago, has left the group no choice but to turn down requests. .

"Already in the past two weeks, since we've found out we lost funding, we've had to say no to ten families," said Benson.

What's worse, if these families can't find a car seat, they can't take their new bundle of joy home.

"Worst case scenario, CPS would pick up the children and hold them until the family can find an appropriate car seat," said Benson.

In the meantime Benson is going to reach out to Brownsville businesses in hopes of getting some monetary donations to purchase car seats.
