Low water levels force cancellation of Florida fishing tournament.

A Florida charity fishing tournament has been canceled after water levels in Cape Coral were deemed approximately three feet too low for boats.

The alarming levels caused the Cape Coral Bass Club president Jim Lewis to cancel Wings of Shelter's Fishing for a Cause tournament at Lake Kennedy Chain.

"I'd like to have this event go off and raise some money for them but unfortunately, safety is a big factor," said Lewis.

His ultimate decision came after he found boats were unable to make it through, either getting stuck, or suffering damage.

"It's tough for us trying to figure out where we can fish," Lewis said.

The water levels aren't normally this low for Lake Kennedy, and Lewis says it's normally not as murky as it has been recently.

"One area where it's 12 feet, and you can probably see all the way to the bottom, but right now only see a foot and a half down, if that," Lewis says.

He says those murky waters can be deadly for fish if the oxygen levels get too low.

"It's bad, but the fish aren't dying, so right now it's still in good shape," said Lewis.

Once water levels rise, Lewis says tournaments and fisherman will return.
