A power plant could be built in the city of Brownsville by a company called Tenaska, based out of Omaha, Nebraska.

"An 800 mega watt natural gas combined cycle generating facility, it is an electrical power plant to be built here in Brownsville. Pub has the need for power as the city and region ontinue to grow, they have a need for additional power, we also see the need for additional power within South Texas and the valley." said director of development with Tenaska, Mike Roth.

The power plant would be located on Old Alice road off FM 5-11. Roth says this plant will have enough power to power 400,000 homes.

During the construction phase of this project there will create roughly 600-700 jobs.
Once the plant is operational there will about 25 jobs available.

"The unemployment rate in Brownsville is actually pretty high, so creating those 600-700 jobs is definitely going to make a big difference and it’s important to state that it’s not just the 600-700 jobs, there are other jobs it’s creating, there are a lot of suppliers to this project so it will definitely have an impact." said President of Association of Mexican Entrepreneurs Marco Saldivar

"We are targeting as early as 2014 for construction to begin, that would mean 2016 for operation, we are still working on permitting so those dates could be pushed a little but that what we are targeting for now." said Roth.
