Military veterans in the Valley will soon have a new place to get care.

A new Veterans Affair clinic is opening on Monday, and will be at the corner of McColl Road and Hackberry Avenue in McAllen. It is 60,000 square feet; the old clinic was 27,000 square feet.

"Having the new facility like this would make it so nice and so much better for treating the veteran," said Dr. Daniel Brown, who's the director of the McAllen VA Clinic.

Clinic volunteers took a tour of the new building today. They are some of the more than 200 volunteers putting in hours at VA facilities in South Texas.

"They are invaluable to us, especially with the size of this facility now, patients coming in, they're going to be needing more wayfinding," Brown said.

The new VA clinic is more than twice the size of the old clinic. The old clinic on Colonel Rowe didn't even have enough space for all the doctors and nurses. Some of them had to work off-site. Here, they can all be under one roof, and there's even space for more.

"Location is one of the things that the VA looked at when they were looking at building a new clinic and tried to find something that would make it easier for patients and staff alike to come to the clinic," Brown said.

The old VA clinic saw more than 10,000 different patients last year. The new building has room for 33 percent more doctors and nurses. It will also have optometry and prosthetic services in-house.

"All in all, it's going to be a good experience for both our local veterans and the Winter Texans when they come down," Brown said.
