MCALLEN — This is 24-Year-Old Ontoniel Palomares.
"I'm super excited," said Palomares.
He's overjoyed because he just landed a job at the new Grand Rapids Foam Technologies Factory in south McAllen. It's just what he needed to continue supporting his wife and 9 month old baby.
"We were barely making it. I have my wife taking care of my son and she was looking to get a new job also to help us out," said Palomares.
Palomares was earning $21,000 a year from his old job, but now he's raking in the big bucks...$16 an hour. The new salary will allow him to buy a new car...something he's never had before...and more.
"We're going to be making it through the month and probably until next year to go out and enjoy ourselves," said Palomares.
Minimum hiring wage at the foam plant is $9 but increases based on your position.
"If you're a front-line leader or a supervisor, or a material handler, the pay could go up as high as $25 an hour," said plant manager, Scott Miller.
The four plants across the US output foam for high end office furniture that sells globally.
The plant's making around 14 different styles of these seat cushions and they're expected to produce a total of two million per year.
...job training is already in action.
"We've already got 14 that have started last week, we're gonna bring a few more on next week and by the end of July, we'll have just about 45 in the facility," said Miller.
The plant is expected to be fully staffed with 150 employees by this time next year.
