EDINBURG, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — District Judge Ricardo Rodriguez is entering the race for Hidalgo County district attorney. He's taking on longtime incumbent Rene Guerra.
Rodriguez has been the 92nd District judge for about seven years. At the announcement on Thursday, he said he wants to see more from the DA's office.
"I see the work that happens in my courtroom everyday," Rodriguez said. "With all due respect from our present district attorney, I feel there's more that can be done."
Guerra has been DA for 31 years. He said the last time he saw a strong candidate for his seat was when he first ran in 1982. Guerra oversees 60 lawyers in his office and was quick to fire back at his challenger.
"I've just been informed that I've been selective in my prosecution, well a lot of people would say that he's been selective in his decision-making as a judge," Guerra said about Rodriguez. "In the courtroom you're managed by rules of evidence and rules of law that you have to follow. In a campaign, the gloves are off. It's almost hand to hand combat for voters' attention."
Rodriguez said cases will be more democratic if he wins the top prosecutor job.
"The citizens are knowledgeable and they know what's going on," Rodriguez said. "There's a lot of things that have happened in these last few months and a lot of people are asking themselves, where's that district attorney at? Why isn't he being aggressive?"
