CAMERON COUNTY - This Sunday marks the start of National Fire Prevention Week and this year's campaign theme focuses on keeping you, your family and your community safer from fire.
More than 75% of all fatalities happen in the home and every year more than 400 children, 9 years-old and younger, die in these fires. Roughly two thirds of home fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms. Cameron County Emergency Management Coordinator Humerto Barrera did offer some tips to keep your family safe, "Don't overpower the outlets. Keep matches and lighters away from children. Check your electrical work. Some people have old electrical work, if you do hire someone to do electrical work in your house then make sure they are licensed and they know what they are doing."
