Preparations are underway for the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Memorials and tributes are being held around the country this week leading up to the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Tuesday reflected on the tragic events that forever changed the city and the country.

"We understood that the hijackers did more than attack two buildings; they attacked the freedom that defines our city and country," he said.

In Queens, dozens participated in a memorial motorcade and wreath laying ceremony to rename intersections in honor of 9/11 heroes, and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta traveled to all three sites Tuesday, beginning at Ground Zero and the 9/11 memorial.

The nation's top security leaders are also taking a look back at the layers of security added in the past decade.

Air travelers have seen the biggest changes, from limits to carry-on baggage and liquids to the use of controversial X-ray technology at checkpoints.

Improved intelligence has also played a significant role.

As the 9/11 anniversary nears, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says there is no specific or credible threat, but concern that some "lone wolf" may want to act out.
