A little know-how on the internet can save a veteran time, energy and even money. Dora Bardee, is one of a few thousand vets taking advantage of the My HealthE Vet program.

"It's just very convenient,” says Bardee.

The online tool is a way for our American heroes to stay in close contact with their doctor from the comfort of their homes.

"There's no need to come in and wait to see your doctor. You can type a message to him and he can get back to you," says Angela Durham, My HealthE Vet Coordinator.

You don't even have to pick up the phone, just a few clicks on the keyboard is all it takes.

From answering questions about small medical problems or making adjustments to medical equipment, veterans are able to have their health needs addressed much quicker. They can also access their medical records, get lab results and check on appointments. Officials at the VA say that one online service in particular is a very popular perk of the program.

"Prescription refill; all you do is go and click on it and it's in the mail," says Bardee.

So just how easy is this website to navigate? Often times the older generation isn't as tech savvy.

"Some of these older guys have never even looked at a computer, so it has to be very straight forward," says Bardee.

She adds for the most part it is, but she admits she has run in to a roadblock a time or two, but that Durham is just a quick call away to help get her where she needs to be.

Out of the 41-thousand veterans enrolled in the Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System only about three thousand are actually taking part in the My HealthE Vet program.

The Valley Coastal Health Care System is trying to get the word out about enrollment so that our veterans can maximize the service available to them, that are literally at their fingertips.
