Murder Suspect Pleads Guilty to Murdering Laura Garza
ORANGE COUNTY, NEW YORK- After years of silence the man accused of murdering Laura Garza has finally come clean. Just moments before the beginning of his murder trial in New York this morning, Michael Mele unexpectedly admitted to killing the valley native.
Mele told prosecutors he brought Laura back to his apartment on December 3, 2008 after leaving Marquee nightclub in Manhattan. He said Laura found out he had a girlfriend. She grew upset and wanted to leave. He admitted to putting his hand over her mouth and nose to stop her from yelling. He said shortly after she stopped yelling, she stopped moving. That's when he realized something bad had happened.
Mele says he panicked. He put her in a laundry basket with a blanket and dumped her body in a wooded area in Pennsylvania. Her body wasn't found until April of 2010. Mele faces up to 23 years in prison for manslaughter and up to 4years for tampering with evidence. Police say he hid evidence from his apartment that affected the investigation. He will be sentenced in March.
