Mother was Under Investigation by CPS
BROWNSVILLE - The mother of the children involved in a drowning at a lake at the Brownsville Sports Park was already being investigated by Child Protective Services.
The 6 year-old boy died after drowning at the lake and recent reports indicate that his 2 year-old sister is still in critical condition after nearly drowning on Sunday. The mother of the children, Maria Elizabeth Perez-Mata, is in custody on two counts of endangerment of a child and investigators say she was under surveillance by CPS. Jeff Johnston, Assistant City Manager of Brownsville, says the city will carefully examine the area, "The city at this point does not have a plan to fence off every water feature within the city. Having said that, we will obviously look at this particular situation and see if there are things above and beyond what the city's already done that should be done in this area."
