Mother charged with three counts of child endangerment

San Benito police have arrested a mother on three counts of endangering a child after one of the toddlers is found wandering the streets.

On Thursday, June 12th at around 10 a.m. police were called to the 500 block of Commerce Street in reference to a 3 year-old boy found wandering the road unsupervised.

Officers searched the area and located a home with the door wide open and made contact with Brittany Torrens, 22, who stated she had fallen sleep and was not aware of her child leaving the home.

The officer noticed the not so suitable living conditions inside the home describing it as dirty, having trash everywhere and food on the floor. Two additional children were discovered in the home, a 2 year-old and 7 month-old, locked inside a room with one child covered in human feces.

Torrens was arrested on three counts of abandoning or endangering a child  and handed a $30,000 bond, Child Protective Services have taken custody of all three children.

During the search of the home police arrested Jesse Edwards, Torrens husband, after it was determined that Torrens had filed a protective order against Edwards which prevented him from living at the residence.

Edwards was charged with violating an emergency protective order and his bond was set at $10,000.
