Rape is violent, rampant, shockingly common in America….and frequently goes unpunished and unreported. The national rape, abuse and incest national network reports there is one sexual assault every two minutes in the United States. That's thirty every hour….and 720 every day. And most times…the assailant is no stranger to the victim.

"60% of the cases is from someone they know either a family friend a relative etc... 30% according to statistics there sexually offended by their parents or a brother or a very very close household contact."

It is estimated that 97% of rapists never see a single day in jail and more than half of the sexual assaults committed in this country are never reported to police. The cases that are reported frequently rely on hospital nurses to gather and protect evidence.

"There are 16 steps nurses have to take to gather evidence of rape victims."

These steps include hair combs, mouth swabs, genital swabs and even finger nail swabs. These tools are used to gather every type of evidence including clothes. All these swabs are gathering DNA samples of the predator.

Doctors say more victims are speaking out these days…and that everyone in the community can help reduce the number of rapes…and make sure the ones that do occur are prosecuted.

"I don't think it happens more here in the valley it can happen any where it can happen to the best families the matter is for us to be more aware teachers at schools, parents, doctors, to be more aware and try to always search and don't take for granted anything that a kid will tell you."

Reporting from Brownsville, Abigail Camilo, KVEO Newscenter 23.
