Senate grills tech executives over mobile device security.

Smart phones provide millions of users with a wealth of information, but how much information those devices may provide companies about the users is a hot topic.

Senator Al Franken chaired a Senate subcommittee hearing on technology and privacy issues Tuesday that attracted, among others, representatives from Apple and Google.

Recent reports of smartphones gathering and transmitting users location information had senators' attention.

Also under scrutiny are third party smartphone app providers.

The hearing comes as at least four online privacy bills have been introduced this legislative session.

Included in some of those bills that have been proposed are requirements that companies tell consumers what data is collected, how that information is protected and with whom it might be shared.
