MCALLEN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A woman is in the hospital after police say she was shot outside her Mission home on Leandro Street.
Mission Police is not releasing the name of the 62-year-old victim. She was shot in the leg and neck and is in critical condition after coming out of surgery at McAllen Medical.
"Most of the shots are converged all in one area there on the driver's side door," said Manuel Casas of the Mission Police Department. "At this time, we don't have a motive behind this, we don't really know who the suspect is."
Police say the victim was returning home when it happened. Typically, she would have to get out of the car and pull open the driveway gate before driving in. Tuesday morning, she got a little bit of help from her husband, who came out after he heard the gunshots.
"He's the one that called 911 and when he stepped out, he said he could smell the strong odor of gun powder," Casas said. "So he knew that somebody was shooting close. But he didn't realize it was his wife. And when he saw the van, he opened up the gate immediately."
All authorities know about the suspect is he's a male in his 20s. Police are still investigating, but initally it doesn't appear that there's a reason why a senior citizen is being targeted in a shooting.
"This neighborhood, we have been here in the past, for similar incidents," Casas said. "But overall, it's just like any other neighborhood. This doesn't appear to be random."
Neighbors in the area say incidents like the one on Tuesday have them thinking about moving.
"Why? For the reason I have a family, and you never know, if you have a drive-by shooting around here, for some reasons," said Sylvano Trevino. "That's what I'm afraid of."
