It was National Teacher Appreciation Day, Tuesday, May 7, and the Mission ISD showed some appreciation to its teachers at a district function.

Dozens of teachers, in the district, were awarded at Tuesday's function, but it was Rosbel Pena, of Alton Memorial, and Victor Alonzo, of Marcell Elementary, who took home district Teacher of the Year honors.

The educators say they know their jobs aren't about awards, "We know that what we do is very important and it impacts the future. Everybody who has a job right now was taught by somebody like me, or similar to myself, and I know that it might be under appreciated, but we have to let teachers know that what we do touches lives and impacts everybody."

Pena won Teacher of the Year for secondary schools in the district and Alonzo won for elementary schools.
