Miracle Baby Goes Home
Baby born 15 weeks premature and with organs outside of his body finally goes home.
After six and a half months, Manny Hernandez is finally leaving Edwards Hospital in Naperville, Illinois.
Doctors and nurses say he's come an incredible distance since his premature birth in July.
His mom went into labor at 25 weeks, 15 weeks early.
Manny emerged weighing only one pound, four ounces.
He had an additional problem as well, a condition in which his liver, stomach and all of his intestines were outside the body.
"We really thought the odds of survival were extremely low," says neonatologist Dr. Deanna Duray.
Dr. Duray says the team of doctors and nurses at Edwards was willing to try.
Ultimately, that meant seven surgeries and round-the-clock care.
The hospital even had to get an FDA license to fly in a drug from Germany to repair Manny's liver.
Doctors say although he is still at risk, his short-term and long-term prognosis is very good.
