Mexican nationals sentenced to prison for possession of grenades

McAllen, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Four Mexican nationals, associated with Zeta drug cartel, were sentenced to prison for possessing 40 mm grenades.
The four men, Juan Ricardo Martinez-Cardenas, 38, Daniel Blanco-Avila, 23, Martin Martinez-Medina, 18, and Jose Lopez-Cerda, 24, who entered the U.S. illegally, pleaded guilty on March 5, 2013 for possessing a destructive device.
Evidence had shown that Martinez-Cardenas had been stopped in a vehicle with a four 40 mm grenades, an improvised 40 mm grenade launcher, four AK-47 type rifles and magazines loaded with 2,791 rounds of ammunition.
Through the investigation it was determined that Blanco-Avila, Martinez-Medina and Lopez Cerda were also involved in the transportation of the weapons and ammunition.
