A pilot program by the Mexican government will place enhanced technology on the Mexican side of the border in Matamoros.
The system will scan vehicles as they cross for 8 seconds reading the vehicles license plate and taking the weight of the car. If anything suspicious arises, a secondary inspection will take place and if necessary the information will be handed over to U.S. authorities. All this to prevent any kind of threat that could effect either country including gun trafficking as well as stolen cars crossing into Mexico.
Mexican officials say delays are expected, but it's all to prevent criminal activity and say the system will also allow for more accountability by Mexican Customs officers and help eliminate corruption. The system will be fully operational by the first weeks in March.
