Mercedes police officers opened fire on a man on Wednesday morning after he came out of a home with a rifle in his hand.
Mercedes police say the two officers opened fire after the man who was locked inside his bedroom opened the door and started shooting. Residents in the neighborhood are dumbfounded to hear about the shooting near their homes and neither homeowner Joventino Ramirez says he woke up around the same time of the shooting and heard nothing.
Mercedes Police Chief Olga Maldonado says someone called 911 around 5am complaining about a man assaulting others at a house located on the 800 block of South Missouri Avenue. When officers arrived, two of them entered the house and the officers shot at the man multiple times. Emergency crews rushed the suspect to Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco and reports say his injuries are not life threatening.
Maldonado would not identify the man or the two officers or release many other details of the shooting.
