The McAllen Crime Stoppers program is fighting more than crime with its latest fundraising project called “Viva McAllen Streets”, this Saturday, August 3, 2013, from 7 am to 5 pm, at Sundance Park (NE of the McAllen Convention Center).

The community event will have a cycling ride called Pedal Against Crime with a 25-mile, 40-mile, 60-mile ride; the McAllen Crime Stoppers Trail Ride on horseback; a sanctioned IBCA cook-off called Cowboy Q’ing Against Crime; the Run for Justice 10k Costume Run & Walk; and much more for the whole family. Participants can register online at www.vivamcallenstreets.com. All funds raised go to McAllen Crime Stoppers.

“We usually have several different fundraisers throughout the year to operate McAllen Crime Stoppers,” said McAllen Crime Stoppers board member Blanca Cardenas. “This year we wanted to do one big event to raise funds that go to pay rewards for information leading to arrests through our anonymous tips line. Viva McAllen Streets gives us an opportunity to give back to a community that has helped our program throughout the last 12 years.”

The community event targets fitness, eating healthy, and safety. The Crime Stoppers program is a success because of the support of the McAllen Police Department. McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said he wanted Crime Stoppers to create an event that would have a long lasting effect in the community.
