Border town mayors, including Brownsville’s, Pat Ahumada don’t believe violence is spilling over the border. They met in Austin yesterday to testify in front of the Texas Legislature's House Committee on Border and Intergovernmental Affairs. Mayor Ahumada, along with other mayors says the extra troops Governor Rick Perry has requested aren't needed. And if they are sent down to the border towns, they will hurt the already struggling economy and will only create fear.
“We don't need the military. Those decisions create more insecurity and hurt our economies.”
An economy that is already struggling nationwide. With the added troops, the mayor says businesses in Brownsville will suffer even more.
“people are not going to come do their bird watching, stay at our hotels, spend money on restaurants and that will destabilize our region.”
Ahumada wants the money that would be used for military troops to be used for extra officers in law enforcement.
