Mayor of Hidalgo Announces Resignation
HIDALGO — After serving nearly 22 years as Mayor of Hidalgo, John David Franz, is stepping down from the office.
Franz made the announcement at a commission meeting on Wednesday evening following months of controversy regarding him and his service as mayor. Mr. Franz had several reasons why he made the decision and he states he has the support of a local political activist group, "In order to make sure that the city is represented, that the doesn't incur any additional costs for a special election in November and to guarantee a smooth transition. I decided I'd make the announcement now. Together with Community United, we're together on this, we're going to vacate the position."
Even though Franz announced his resignation, he will remain mayor, until a a replacement is chosen during a special election set on May 12th.
