Denver, CO — New research has found a possible link between marijuana and schizophrenia.
Scientists took nearly one hundred teens, both healthy and schizophrenic, and divided them into four groups.
Researchers performed MRI scans on their brains. The healthy and schizophrenic teens with a history of smoking marijuana showed shrinkage in the regions of the brain connected with working memory.
Also, the same group scored lower in memory tests, compared to the healthy and schizophrenic patients who had never used the drug.
The study does not establish that smoking pot can cause schizophrenia, but suggest that marijuana use should be further examined for the brain changes it can cause.
The findings are published in the journal schizophrenia bulletin.
