Ronald Blake Fears, 37, was sentenced today to 50 years in prison with no possibility of early release for sexual abuse of a child.

Judge Arturo Cisneros Nelson of the 138th state District Court sentenced the Harlingen resident to 50 years for continuous sexual abuse of a child and 20 years respectively for one count of sexual assault and three counts of indecency with a child. The four 20-year sentences shall be served concurrently with the 50-year sentence.

The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office was successful in utilizing Jessica’s Law that was enacted in 2007. The Law, named after Jessica Lunsford, a young Florida girl who was sexually battered and murdered in 2005, allows for some of the nation’s harshest punishments for individuals committing continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Cameron County Assistant District Attorneys Stephanie Rollins and Brandy Bailey introduced an additional witness as punishment evidence. The 21-year-old witness testified that Fears sexually abused her at age 16, while she was on summer break. By law, anyone under age 17 is considered a child in such cases.

“I’m very proud of the Team that worked on this case, and their hard work proves the District Attorney’s Office is passionate about making sure justice is served,” District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said. “A crime against a child is the most horrendous crime and deserves an equally unbearable sentence.”
