Man Receives New Face
Doctors at University of Maryland perform their first full-face transplant on gun shot victim.
Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center have performed the most extensive full-face transplant ever.
Physicians spoke about the 36-hour procedure on Tuesday in Baltimore.
The procedure was done on 37-year-old Richard Lee Norris of Hillsville, Virginia.
The operation was the most extensive full-face transplant performed to date and included a jaw, teeth and a tongue.
Norris's new face came from a single donor who was able to help another five different recipients with other organs.
Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center intended to help war veterans when they began researching face transplants ten years ago.
Norris was chosen out of five candidates for this procedure.
He suffered a gun accident in 1997.
