Harlingen police arrested a Brownsville man after being accused of assaulting his common-law-wife and a police officer.

On Sunday, December 8th Harlingen police officers were called to a home on the 900 block of E. Monroe Avenue in reference to a disturbance.

When officers arrived they heard noises of someone hitting a wall and a woman speaking in Spanish.

Officers made contact with the woman who had visible injuries to her face and who was crying. The woman stated to police that her common-law husband, Gerardo Gutierrez Jr., 30, had assaulted her with his fist causing a laceration on her lip, bleeding and pain.

Officers searched the home and found Gutierrez hiding in the bath tub behind the shower curtain. Police attempted to arrest Gutierrez but he resisted and a struggle ensued and eventually handcuffing him.

After being handcuffed Gutierrez assaulted one of the officers by kicking them on their shin and right knee.

Gutierrez was charged with assault/family violence, assault on a public servant and resisting arrest with a bond of $52,500 dollars.
