A San Benito man was arrested for the theft of a beer can and was handed a bond of $22,000.

On Wednesday, June 25th in the early morning hours Harlingen police were dispatched to a Stripes store located at 1250 N. 77 Sunshine Strip in reference to a theft.

The clerk advised the officer that a man walked into the store, selected a 25 oz beer, valued at $1.79, from the cooler and concealed it under his shirt and attemtped to exit the store without paying for the item.

The suspect, identified as Mario Gonzalez Menchaca, 61, displayed signs of intoxicaton and was arrested on the charge of theft and public intoxication. Menchaca had previous convictions for the same charges enhancing the current offenses resulting in a $22,000 bond.
