Man arrested for attempting to smuggle marijuana at port of entry
BROWNSVILLE, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — An American citizen, residing in Matamoros, Mexico has been charged with possession of marijuana after he attempted to smuggle marijuana in a vehicle gas tank.
On Wednesday, February 5th at around 3:30 p.m. San Benito PD responded to the Gateway International port of entry in regards to a narcotic seizure.
Custom and Border Protection officers encountered Miguel Angel Chavez, 37, who attempted to enter into the U.S. in a white 2001 Chevy S-10 Blazer and was referred to a secondary inspection.
During the inspection of the vehicle agents discovered a container, inside the gas tank, and found 37 pounds of alleged marijuana.
Homeland Security Investigation agents contacted the U.S. Attorney's Office who declined to prosecute Chavez due the amount of marijuana not meeting the federal threshold.
The case was referred to the San Benito PD for prosecution and Chavez was arrested and charged with one count of possession of marijuana and handed a bond of $25,000.
