Investigators say the victim and alleged perpetrator met through the victim's cousin who worked with the accused at a local restaurant in Brownsville.
Forty-four year old Leonardo Rodriquez has been charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
The victim told police that Rodriguez forced him to perform sex acts while threatening him with a screw driver.
The alleged incident happened nearly two years ago when the victim was just 15, but it wasn't until recently that the teen made an outcry to a BISD school counselor, as well as a family member. Both reported the alleged sexual assault to Brownsville police.
Despite the outcry being a few years back, according to the Cameron Co. District Attorney’s Office, the statue of limitation for arresting a person on this type of charge, sexual assault of a child, doesn't even begin until the child turns 18. Once a child is an adult, they have a 10 year window to report the crime if legal action is to be taken against the sexual predator.
"Immediately investigators began working up the case and eventually made the arrest of Leonardo Rodriguez." said Brownsville Police Dept, PIO, Eddie Garcia.
Once in police custody the “recently arrested” began talking.
"He gave a confession that he did indeed have sexual relations with the 15 1/2 year old male." said Cameron Co. Assistant District Attorney, Arturo Teniente.
Authorities say in cases like this, where it's the victim's word against the accused, self implications or confessions definitely help in getting a conviction once the case hits the courtroom.
Rodriquez bond has been set at $50-thousand. If convicted he could face 5-99 years behind bars.
