The man accused of stabbing his wife 24 times over the weekend is being charged with attempted murder.

Jose Luis Canamar faced a judge this afternoon in San Juan and was given a $500,000 bond.  Canamar was released from the hospital today after stabbing himself multiple times in the neck.

The victim, Joanna Estrada, remains in the hospital in critical condition but is said to be making good progress.

Police say Canamar was intoxicated during the early Sunday morning attack.

"We've gotten some statements from some family members that they mentioned there was a history of possible domestic violence," said Chief Juan Gonzalez.  "We know of another incident that might have been involved that he brandished a weapon--a knife--at her during one of the incidents, but we're still investigating that incident."

Canamar and Estrada's divorce was supposed to be finalized this week.  The couple has a 3-year-old son together who is currently in the care of relatives.
