Lucky To Be Alive
Teen escapes with only scratches after being kidnapped at knife point.
An 18-year-old is shaken but safe after being kidnapped from a shopping mall in Lincoln City, Oregon on Sunday, and police are searching for the suspect.
Chelsea Hopkins, her sister, and two friends had just finished some shopping at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Lincoln around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Hopkins, 18, made a quick visit to her car in the parking garage when a man forced her into the vehicle at knife-point.
"He said, 'don't scream or I'll kill you,'" said Hopkins.
Hopkins managed to signal her sister across the lot, who was close enough to read her lips, mouthing the words “help me.”
The man drove Hopkins away from the mall, punching her several times along the way.
"As soon as I saw the car drive away I had a vision that I would never see my sister again," said Amanda Hopkins.
The man drove the elder Hopkins eastbound on Devil’s Lake Road, took a turn about a mile later and reached a dead-end in front of a barn.
"I was going to have to act and do something then," said Hopkins.
At that point, Hopkins made a break for it.
She sprinted for a nearby home, jumping through barbed-wire fence to get there.
“There was a man who sprung up from the couch,” said Hopkins. “I was shaking and covered in blood. I kept saying ‘help me, there's a man out there right now.’”
Police say the man ditched the car near the barn and fled on foot.
Police searched for the suspect until dark but were unable to locate him.
They do have surveillance images of a man who menaced two cleaning ladies at knife point earlier in the day at a nearby hotel.
Hopkins says it's the same man, but police were considering all possibilities.
Police say the suspect has reddish hair, stands about 5’ 10” tall, weighs about 180 pounds, and is missing his front teeth.
