LOWER VALLEY — It's not so much what's going on inside, but before you even step into the building is where the trouble starts.
"Ramps, doors, restrooms big enough for a wheel chair, things like that are some of the things we're looking for," said Humberto Barrera, Emergency Coordinator.
Cameron County officials have received phone calls from residents that some of the 8-liner locations aren't handicap accessible.
When you get complaints from the public, you need to look into it." said Barrera.
In the past 2 1/2 weeks alone, county officials have shut down around 30 8-liners and an additional 20 have closed their doors on their own to avoid compliance fines.
Barerra says this isn't an 8-liner sting or operation and they're not just targeting gambling sites.
"We're doing inspections at daycares, nursing homes, schools. I mean, we're not just every day waking up and saying hey let's go to 8-liners," said Barrera.
Barrera adds that this is just the beginning and the inspections will continue.
