SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — The only blue eyed sea turtle, on SPI, is now being transferred to another aquarium at the Dallas zoo.
The Loggerhead sea turtle , MJ, officially left early Wednesday morning, Sea Turtle Inc. was home for MJ for nearly the last nine years.
MJ was rescued as a stranded turtle who only weighed one pound and now she's at 150 pounds.
Most of the turtles are released back into the ocean once they're healthy, but MJ was one of those turtles that was non-releasable.
Sea Turtle, Inc. Executive Director Jeff George stated, "She's missing pieces of all four flippers, doesn't function well enough to be in the ocean, but makes a great exhibit animal for an aquarium, so she's on her way to Dallas right now. MJ is one of the most popular turtles we've ever had, she is the only blue-eyed sea turtle that any of us have ever seen. Sea turtles don't have blue eyes, but this one did, she was in everyone's heart."
