Locals Begin Preparing for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season is here and that means the time to prepare is right now. Cameron County’s Emergency Management Coordinator Humberto Barrera wants everyone to be prepared.

“Some people take it for granted that nothing is going to hit us,” says Barrera. “If we can all be on the same page we can all communicate fluently. It makes the process a lot easier when you are able to communicate to your neighboring city.”

Barrera was just one of the speakers on hand to address nearly two hundred citizens at Wednesday’s Hurricane Preparedness meeting in South Brownsville.

“It has been awhile and Dolly was the last thing that really tested our system,” says Barrera. “It's a strong possibility that this could be the year.”

Those who attended the meeting received instructional packets and guidelines about the steps needed to prepare for a hurricane. Attendees were also offered the opportunity to sign up for 211 Texas, which is a service that connects resident to health services and transportation in the event of a hurricane.

“If we can safeguard at least one family it makes it all worth it,” says Barrera.
